James McMillan, MD earned his medical degree at Loma Linda University where he also completed his Internal Medicine Residency, staying on as chief medical resident at the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Hospital. Subsequently he completed his Nephrology Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He served as chief of nephrology at the Loma Linda VA from 2003 to 2016. He is now the Nephrology Fellowship Program Director for Loma Linda University and is an associate professor of medicine. His interests include prevention of progression of chronic kidney disease, fluids and electrolytes, and lifestyle influences on kidney disease. Amir Abdipour, MD is a graduate of Shahid Beheshti Medical University from Iran. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at Loma Linda University. He is currently Chief of Nephrology Division. He also serves as Medical Director of Therapeutic Apheresis Services at Loma Linda university Medical Center. His clinical interests include Acute Kidney Injury, ICU Nephrology, CRRT, Kidney stones and Apheresis Modalities. He is fluent in English and Farsi.
He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University. Sergio Infante, MD is a graduate of El Bosque University, School of Medicine, Bogota, Colombia. His training in Internal Medicine was at Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota, Colombia and Charles Drew University, Los Angeles, CA. He subsequently completed his Nephrology Fellowship at the University of California, Davis. He also completed an Educational Leadership Fellowship at the University of Southern California. His clinical interests include Critical Care Medicine and Underserved Community Healthcare.
He is the Associate Program Director for the Nephrology Fellowship at Loma Linda University and serves as the chair of the Program Evaluation Committee. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at LLU. He enjoys cooking and traveling.
Rafael Villicana MD is a Transplant Nephrologist who earned his medical degree from Michigan State University. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He subsequently completed Nephrology and Transplant Nephrology Fellowships from UCSF.
He then spent nearly a decade on staff at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. His interests include kidney and pancreas transplantation, living kidney donation and ABO /HLA incompatible kidney transplantation. He is fluent in Spanish. He is an associate professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University. Enrica Fung, MD, MPH, graduated from the University of California Berkeley and University of California Davis School of Medicine.
She also holds a MPH degree in Epidemiology from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, a main teaching site of Stanford University School of Medicine, where she was twice named Resident of the Year and Chief Resident.
More recently, she completed Nephrology Fellowship at Stanford where she was also a Clinical Instructor of Medicine. She is passionate about teaching and medical education.
Her research interests include healthcare delivery and end-of-life decision making for CKD patients. Outside of work, she enjoys yoga and hiking.
Susan Hall, MD, PhD, MPH serves as Research Advisor in the Nephrology Fellowship Program. She completed undergraduate work at the University of Michigan, and subsequently entered the NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program, earning a PhD in Biochemistry and MD degree at Loma Linda University.
She completed her residency in Preventive Medicine at Loma Linda University with a focus on research study design, earning an MPH degree in Biostatistics and Epidemiology. She has over 17 years of experience in the field of bone biology and osteoporosis research focusing on the development of bone marrow transplantation and gene therapy strategies to safely and effectively deliver bone-forming treatments directly to bone. She is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Basic Sciences, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Loma Linda University. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Institutional Review Board for the ethical conduct of human research at the Jerry L. Pettis VA Medical Center, and provides mentorship to the Internal Medicine Residency Program in the design and implementation of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement projects. Jaipaul is Chief of Nephrology and Interim Chief of Medicine at VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. He is Professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
He is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in Nephrology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During his fellowship, he was the recipient of a NIH T32 training grant in Clinical Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
He has been a mentor to students, residents, and fellows interested in chronic kidney disease clinical outcomes research. He has also been recognized for developing one of the most successful kidney transplant programs in the VA. Seyed-Ali Sadjadi, MD, graduated from the University of Tehran School of Medicine in 1972; completed an Internal Medicine Residency and a Nephrology Fellowship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine affiliated hospitals in New York City, and a transplant medicine fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in 1993. His main areas of interest are dialysis, fluid and electrolytes.

Zhiwei Zhang, MD is a staff nephrologist at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System and associate professor of medicine at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. After earning a medical degree from Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences in China, Dr. Zhang completed his Internal Medicine Residency in China as well as in the United States, followed by a combined Nephrology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital.
He has been on staff at Harvard University and St. Louis University prior to his current position.
His research interests are focused on the mechanism of renal epithelial cell injury and repair as well as tumorigenesis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Clinically he is interested in the diagnosis and management of acute kidney injury and hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). Department Chair since 2009, Dr Hegstad embraces the trust our trainees place in us and the obligation and joy for faculty members to “pay forward” their own opportunities. He has overseen renewal and growth of the faculty, more than doubling the faculty employment at the University.A graduate of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Dr. Hegstad did his Internal Medicine Residency training at Loma Linda University and served as Chief Medical Resident at its Riverside General Hospital (now Riverside University Medical Center) affiliate.
For nearly a decade, he served as Chair of its Department of Medicine.He has served as Governor of the Southern California Region II Chapter of the American College of Physicians and President of the American College of Physicians California Chapters. For more than a decade, he was a member of the College Health and Public Policy Committee. He served as Public Relations spokesman for the College, doing radio and television appearances. In 2011, he was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians.He has had a long-standing engagement in education. He has served as the Department of Medicine Student Education Director and has been recipient of the University’s “Teacher of the Year Award.”He and his wife Alane live in Loma Linda.

Loo received his M.D. Degree from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and subsequently completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Chief Resident year at Loma Linda University and affiliated hospitals. This was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Primary Care and Faculty Development from Michigan State University. He is currently board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Master in the American College of Physicians. He maintains staff privileges at all three of the major hospital affiliates of the IM residency program including Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), Loma Linda VA Healthcare System (LLVAH), and Riverside University Health System (RUHS). He currently serves as the Vice-Chair for Education and Faculty Development within the Department of Medicine, helping to coordinate the continuum of professional development from medical student education, graduate medical training including the IM residency and fellowships, and continuing medical education. He currently is Professor of Medicine in the both the Departments of Medicine and Medical Education.
Loo’s professional career has been as a clinician-educator and his current scholarly activities have focused on the teaching and evaluation of Evidence-based Medicine, Professionalism, and Professional Identity Formation. He immensely enjoys working with students, residents, fellows, and faculty who wish to pursue an academic career in medical education.
Nguyen is Vice-Chair of Research and Professor of Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Basic Sciences. He is also Head of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, as well as Director for the Medical Intensive Care Unit. He received M.D. Degree from the University of California, Irvine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, and went on to complete a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Loma Linda University.Dr. Nguyen joined the faculty of Loma Linda University in 2003. His research includes multi-disciplinary critical care delivery, early intervention and novel therapies in severe sepsis, lactate clearance and biomarkers discovery.
Having co-authored Early Goal-Directed Therapy (EGDT), Nguyen led LLUMC as one of the earliest adopters of the sepsis resuscitation bundle. His list of over 100 publications and dedication to bridging the gap between research and clinical practice has taken him across the country and around the globe. More recently, Dr. Nguyen has developed special interest in clinical informatics and partners with Information Services at LLUMC to develop predictive analytics in order to better patient care and increase research productivity in the Department.
